While there are many different forms of meditation and ways to practice, learning a basic meditation for beginners is a great place to begin:

  1. Choose a quiet spot that is free of distractions. Turn off your phone, television, and other distractions.
  2. Set a time limit. If you are just getting started, you might want to stick to shorter sessions of about 5 to 10 minutes in length.
  3. Pay attention to your body and get comfortable.
  4. Focus on your breathing.
  5. Notice your thoughts.

How do we meditate

Meditation can produce a deep state of relaxation and a tranquil mind. During meditation, you focus your attention and eliminate the stream of jumbled thoughts that may be crowding your mind and causing stress.

To meditate, start by finding a calm, peaceful spot where you can sit down without being disturbed. Then, sit in a comfortable position on a chair or on the floor and close your eyes. Start by breathing deeply in through your nose and out through your mouth. While you breathe, try to clear your mind of any thoughts or distractions. You can also try focusing on a specific word or phrase to help you concentrate. If you find that your mind starts to wander, gently bring it back to your breath or your word/phrase. You can meditate for as long as you like, but it’s best to start with shorter sessions of about 5 to 10 minutes in length.

Normally, what we think about when meditating is based on sensory experience. For instance, when we are doing Vipassana, we will label any sensory experience that the mind is drawn to. We might say, “this is a sound” or “this is a feeling”. Many meditation techniques ask us to think about love and compassion. For instance, Metta meditation (Loving Kindness) and KarunaMetta is a form of meditation in which we visualize giving and receiving warm feelings of love and kindness to and from other peopleHowever, some experts recommend thinking about nothing during meditation.

Can I meditate lying down  

you can meditate lying down. However, it is important to note that sitting is always more preferred than lying flat on your back. There are some types of meditation which might require you to lie down, like sleep meditation and for meditation practices that help put you into a deep sleep

 meditation can change the structure of the brain. In 2011, Sara Lazar and her team at Harvard found that mindfulness meditation can actually change the structure of the brain: Eight weeks of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) was found to increase cortical thickness in the hippocampus, which governs learning and memory, and in certain areas of the brain that play roles in emotion regulation and self-referential processing. Some research shows that meditation can change the brain’s structure. Others show that it can change brain functions

What are the 5 stages of meditation 

There are different types of meditation and each type has its own stages. For example, dynamic meditation has 5 stages: Stage 1: Heavy breathing. Stage 2: Shouting. Stage 3: Frenetic movement. Stage 4: Mantra repetition. Stage 5: Jumping, stillness and celebratory dance. However, there are other types of meditation that have different stages.

The best meditation technique for you depends on your personal preferences and what you hope to achieve through meditation. Here are some of the most popular meditation techniques:

The signs of deep meditation:

There are several signs that indicate that one has reached a deep state of meditation. Here are some of them:

  • Your mind becomes calmer
  • Your sense of self falls away
  • The relaxation response kicks in
  • Physical pain and emotional stress are suspended
  • You have more compassion and grace

There are different types of meditation and each type has its own stages. For example, there is a type of meditation called Insight Meditation that has 3 stages: 

  • 1) Learning to ground relates to what we generally call mindfulness. It is a way of engaging with appearances (the content of your mind), accepting them and building your ability to concentrate. 
  • 2) Learning to see clearly leads us into stage 2: seeing clearly. Here we move from acceptance and mindfulness of the body into insight. 
  • 3) Just Sitting. However, there are other types of meditation that have different stages.    

How long does it take for meditation to start working

It takes up to 6 to 12 weeks for meditation to start working if you have been practicing meditation daily for at least 10 to 20 minutes. When it comes to meditation, not everyone is going to have the same experience and results. One analysis of 30 studies on meditation found that it can take as little as eight weeks for meditation to have physical effects on the brain. These physical changes to specific areas of the brain promote greater emotional regulation and better focus.

What happens when we meditate and fall asleep

It is very common that you’re losing consciousness at some point when you meditate. A lot of people think, especially when they start meditating, that they’re falling asleep. But what’s actually happening is that you are falling into transcendence, a short period in which your brain transitions between waking and sleeping. One of the main reasons behind the phenomenon is that it can be really relaxing to meditate.
